Man Successfully Opens Grenade With Sledgehammer, 8/10/2006

A man who worked in a mechanical shop tried to open a grenade with a sledgehammer and was somewhat successful. The grenade opened with an explosion killing the man and seriously wounding another.

The shop was destroyed and several cars parked outside of the shop caught fire from the blast.

Police found several more 'unopened' grenades in the ruins of the shop just outside of Rio de Janeiro. They suspected that they were brought there and sold as scrap metal.

Lieberman rival owns stock in Wal-Mart

Washington Times, 8/4/06

Connecticut millionaire businessman Ned Lamont, who sharply criticized the employment practices of Wal-Mart this week in his campaign to unseat Sen. Joe Lieberman in the Democrat primary, owns stock in the company, Senate records reveal.

"This is about waking up Wal-Mart, and this is also about waking up corporate America," Mr. Lamont said Wednesday at a Bridgeport rally against the retail giant, hosted by many of the same liberal bloggers who have boosted the former cable executive far ahead of Mr. Lieberman in the polls.

But Mr. Lamont and his family are part owners of the company, according to financial disclosure records he filed earlier this year with the secretary of the Senate. Mr. Lamont, his wife and a dependent child own as much as $31,000 in Wal-Mart stock.
Mr. Lamont and his wife jointly own two accounts containing as much as $16,000 in Wal-Mart stock. Their Wal-Mart holdings spin off as much as $3,500 in annual dividends. In addition, a trust fund he set up for one of his children contains as much as $15,000 in Wal-Mart stock and spins off as much as $1,000 in dividends.

In his remarks at the anti-Wal-Mart rally this week, Mr. Lamont never mentioned his shareholder status in the company. He did, however, criticize Mr. Lieberman for not doing more during this three terms in the Senate to help the workers he says are so mistreated by Wal-Mart.

Manilow torture

San Mateo Daily Journal, 7/18/06

SYDNEY, Australia  — It could be magic for some, but the use of loud Barry Manilow music to drive away late-night revelers from a suburban Sydney park is getting on the nerves of nearby residents.

In a move reminiscent of U.S. efforts to use music to drive former Panama strongman Manuel Noriega from the Vatican Embassy in 1989, the local council in Rockdale, in Sydney’s southern suburbs, started a six-month trial of high-volume hits by Manilow and Doris Day to chase away car enthusiasts who were gathering on weekend nights at Cook Park Reserve.
“Barry’s our secret weapon,” Rockdale Deputy Mayor Bill Saravinovski said. “It seems to be working.”

But some people living near the park are less than enthralled. They say the barrage of “Copacabana,” “Could It Be Magic” and “Que Sera Sera,” blasting from 9 p.m. to midnight every Friday, Saturday and Sunday is driving them crazy.

Bob Geldof Slams New Zealand Foreign Aid

Associated Press, 7/14/06

WELLINGTON, New Zealand – Sir Bob Geldof on Friday slammed New Zealand's foreign aid contribution as "pathetic" and a "disgrace" — earning an immediate rebuke from the nation's foreign minister, who said the Irish rocker had his facts wrong.

Geldof, 54, first earned fame as a rocker with the Boomtown Rats, then as the organizer of 1985's Live Aid benefit concert aimed at fighting global hunger.

Al Gore's Hypocrisy Exposed, 8/10/06

Al Gore insists the world must embrace a "carbon-neutral lifestyle" and make necessary sacrifices to head off what he warns will be an environmental cataclysm – but in his personal life he doesn’t practice what he preaches.
"Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb," warns the Web site for his global warming documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth.”

Gore tells consumers how to change their lives to curb their carbon-gobbling ways: Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs, use a clothesline, drive a hybrid, use renewable energy, dramatically cut back on consumption.

But "public records reveal that as Gore lectures Americans on excessive consumption, he and his wife Tipper live in two properties: a 10,000-square-foot, 20-room, eight-bathroom home in Nashville, and a 4,000-square-foot home in Arlington, Va. He also has a third home in Carthage, Tenn.,” Peter Schweizer, author of the book Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy, writes in USA Today.

"For someone rallying the planet to pursue a path of extreme personal sacrifice, Gore requires little from himself.”
Gore doesn’t follow his own advice when it comes to energy consumption, either.

In the Washington, D.C., area, utility companies offer wind energy as an alternative to traditional energy, and similar programs exist in Nashville. Utility customers who pay two extra pennies per kilowatt hour can take a big step toward a carbon-neutral lifestyle.

But according to public records, there is no evidence that Gore has signed up to use wind energy in either of his large residences, reveals Schweizer, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution.

"Talk about inconvenient truths.”

Gore claims to be environmentally friendly, but he hasn’t dumped his family's large stock holdings in Occidental (Oxy) Petroleum. As executor of his family's trust, over the years Gore has controlled hundreds of thousands of dollars in Oxy stock, while Oxy has been beset by controversy over oil drilling in ecologically sensitive areas.

Humanity might be "sitting on a ticking time bomb," but Gore's home in Carthage is sitting on a zinc mine.

Gore receives $20,000 a year in royalties from Pasminco Zinc, which operates a zinc concession on his property. Tennessee has cited the company for contaminating the nearby Caney Fork River with quantities of barium, iron and zinc.

"The issue here is not simply Gore's hypocrisy; it's a question of credibility,” Schweizer writes.

"If he genuinely believes the apocalyptic vision he has put forth, and calls for radical changes in the way other people live, why hasn't he made any radical change in his life? Giving up the zinc mine or one of his homes is not asking much, given that he wants the rest of us to radically change our lives.”

All Headline News, 8/7/06

McKinney Supporters Blaming Jews, 8/10/06

DECATUR, Georgia - Despite a landslide loss in Tuesday night's primary runoff against Hank Johnson, the controversy just keeps coming out of the Cynthia McKinney campaign.

First there was a scuffle between McKinney's bodyguards and an 11Alive news photographer, then there were remarks made to a cable network news crew, in which members of McKinney's entourage allegedly made shocking anti-Semitic remarks.

The Anti-Defamation League says they want to hear from McKinney and they want her to disavow the anti-Semitic remarks reported by the network crew, remarks that recall the scandal that cost her the election in 2002.

The remarks were allegedly made just moments after McKinney's entourage passed out of earshot of 11Alive cameras, as the congresswoman left her campaign headquarters on Tuesday night.

Someone reportedly said quote, “You wanna know what led to the loss? Israel. The Zionists. You. Put on your yarmulke and celebrate."

The ADL lists the New Black Panther Party as a hate group, and questioned their affiliation with the McKinney campaign as well.

During the final days of the campaign, one face continued to show up in photographers’ lenses – McKinney’s personal bodyguard, Steve Muhammad.

On one occasion, Muhammad said, "Right now it's personal -- she's having personal conversation can't you understand that."

And on Tuesday afternoon, during an altercation with an 11Alive photojournalist, Muhammad said, “That’s right, and I'm going to touch you again if you do that again.”

Muhammad is no stranger to the cameras. A grandmaster in Kenpo-style karate, he's a contemporary of Bruce Lee, and even had a role in his movie "Enter The Dragon," playing Jim Kelly's karate teacher.

On Tuesday night, however, in a dust-up still being investigated by DeKalb County police, Muhammad ended up with stitches.

11Alive News tried repeatedly throughout the course of the day on Wednesday to get someone from the McKinney campaign or her congressional office to comment on the matter without success.

Sir Bob Geldof Stops Peaches' Allowance, 8/13/06

Teenage wild child Peaches Geldof has had her allowance stopped by her father Sir Bob Geldof.

Peaches is currently DJing in Ibiza with her friend Fiona Richie under the name Trash Pussies where she is having a grand old time.

After bumping into the Bodyrocker’s hunky frontman Kaz in Santa Eulalia, Peaches splashed out £4,000 on a bottle of champagne

A source told the Star: "Peaches didn't realise how expensive it would all be. She really wants Trash Pussies to make it as credible DJs. So it would really help to have the backing of the Bodyrockers. And it was obvious she has a massive crush on Kaz.

"His past relationship with Kate Moss also increases his cool status. So she thought it was worth every penny."

Sir Bob heard of her extravagance and decided to stop it using extreme measure: "Peaches is sorry about upsetting her dad and she doesn't know how to persuade him to start paying her again.”

Iranian President Cracks Down On Citizen Blogging, Starts His Own Blog, 8/14/06

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has started a blog. In his first post, Ahmadinejad described his “humble origins” and the beginnings of his anti-Americanism.

But under Ahmadinejad, ordinary Iranian citizens are increasingly unable to start their own blogs:

Iranian authorities are stepping up arrests and pressure on popular bloggers as part of a wider Internet clampdown launched after hard-liner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad became president last year, ending years of freewheeling Web access that once made Iran among the most vibrant online locales in the Middle East.

The Internet censors are busy. Their targets include sexual content, international politics, local grumbling, chat rooms and anything else that makes the Islamic leadership uneasy. Mohammad Ali Dadkhah, a prominent human rights lawyer, estimates at least 50 bloggers have been detained since last year.

We’re guessing the government censors will leave Ahmadinejad’s new blog alone.

The Mirror (London), 8/15/06

LOONY officials rejected a little girl's passport application in case a photo showing her bare shoulders offended Muslims.

Hannah Edwards, five, was wearing a summer dress when her mum took her to the post office to have the picture taken before a holiday in the South of France.

Mum Jane, a family doctor, then had the application form signed and handed it in at her post office in Sheffield.
But officials refused to accept it and warned the picture could be considered offensive in some Muslim countries because Hannah's skin was visible at the bottom.

Jane and husband Martin had to cover up Hannah for a second photo as they raced to re-submit the form in time for their holiday later this month.

BBC News, 8/15/06

Controversial Muslim group gets VIP airport security tour, 8/18/06

The Department of Homeland Security took a Muslim group with known past ties to terror organizations on a VIP tour of security operations at the nation's busiest airport at the same time British authorities were working to break up a plot to blow up U.S. airlines.

On June 21, a senior DHS official from Washington personally guided Muslim officials from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on a behind-the-scenes tour of Customs screening operations at O'Hare International Airport in response to

CAIR complaints that Muslim travelers were being unfairly delayed as they entered the U.S. from abroad.
CAIR is a spin-off of the Islamic Association for Palestine, identified by two former FBI counterterrorism chiefs as a "front group" for the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas. Several CAIR leaders have been convicted on terror-related charges.

During the airport tour, CAIR was taken on a walk through the point-of-entry, Customs stations, secondary screening and interview rooms. In addition, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents were asked to describe for CAIR representatives various features of the high-risk passenger lookout system.

In a meeting, Brian Humphrey, Customs and Border Patrol's executive director of field operations, assured CAIR officials that agents do not single out Muslim passengers for special screening and that they must undergo a mandatory course in Muslim sensitivity training. The course teaches agents that Muslims believe jihad is an "internal struggle against sin" and not holy warfare.

Customs agents involved in the CAIR tour at O'Hare tell WorldNetDaily they were outraged that headquarters would reveal sensitive counterterrorism procedures to an organization that has seen several of its own officials convicted of terror-related charges since 9-11.

CAIR says the tour allayed its concerns about profiling and that it "looks forward to continuing the relationship with U.S. Customs and Border Protection offices in the region, and to furthering understanding between the organizations as well as facilitating future communication in order to eliminate problems for Muslim travelers before they even arise."
A Customs and Border Protection  supervisor described Nydell's instruction, along with CBP's companion training manual and video, as "politically correct drivel."

"It's all about how Islam means peace and tolerance," he told WorldNetDaily. "We're told how to deal with Arabs and Muslims, that they are loving people and not terrorists. That jihad is struggle with sin and has nothing to do with violence."
Washington-based CAIR also has regular meetings with the FBI and Justice Department. In fact, FBI case agents complain the bureau rarely can make a move in the Muslim community without first consulting with CAIR, which sits on its advisory board. CAIR in the past has cried racism and bigotry when the bureau has moved unilaterally with investigations and raids in the community.

Lion Kills Intruder in Kiev Zoo Pen, 5/6/06

KIEV, Ukraine  - A man was mauled by a lioness at Kiev Zoo Sunday, after he entered lion’s pen, local news agencies reported. Witnesses say he attempted to preach the beasts.

The UNIAN news agency cited police officials as saying that the man had approached the enclosure, tied a rope to the fence and climbed down into the enclosure where a lion and four lionesses were resting.

Other visitors at the zoo tried to stop him but failed.

“We told him — what are you doing, are you crazy?” an eye-witness was quoted by website as saying.

“And he said, ’Who believes in God will be unharmed by the lions’”.

On descending to the ditch surrounding the enclosure, the man climbed out onto the ground, approached the animals and began to preach them, but a lioness attacked him.

The 45-year-old died immediately of wounds. Other visitors tried to distract the animals by throwing bottles and litter at them, but failed.

Illegal aliens linked to gang-rape wave, 8/22/06

A wave of illegal-immigrant gang rapes is sweeping the U.S. while public officials and law-enforcement authorities fear drawing the link, experts say.

Deborah Schurman-Kauflin, a Ph.D. researcher of violent crimes, told WorldNetDaily, "It appears as if there is a fear that if this is honestly discussed, people will hate all illegal immigrants. So there is silence. … But in being silent about the rapes and murders, it is as if the victims never even existed."

Schurman-Kauflin, who runs the Violent Crimes Institute in Atlanta, participated in a 12-month, in-depth study of illegal immigrants who committed sex crimes and murders from January 1999 through April 2006. The study found approximately 240,000 illegal-immigrant sex offenders reside in the United States – while 93 sex offenders and 12 serial sexual offenders come across U.S. borders illegally every day.

Schurman-Kauflin said, "Gang rapes by illegal immigrants appear to be gang related. Many of the cases I reviewed involved gang members. As part of being a cohesive group, they offend together. Inflicting brutal gang rapes brings them closer together as a group. It is a way to demonstrate their power. And it sends a message to anyone who dares to cross them."

Americans for Legal Immigration PAC told WND it now is tracking 12 gang rapes by illegal aliens within America's borders since Oct. 2004.

ALIPAC's president, William Gheen, said, "These are just the ones we know of. The real number is much higher.”

MS-13, also known as Mara Salvatrucha, a highly organized and well-funded Central American gang, is infiltrating at least 33 states across the U.S., according to law-enforcement authorities. The gang is well-known in Los Angeles, Houston, New York and Washington, D.C., for excessive brutality. Any person suspected of cooperating with authorities is hunted down, tortured and killed. Initiation rites include kickings, beatings and gang rapes.

Gheen said, "These gangs are forcing new female gang members to undergo gang rape to enter the gang and they are asking their male initiates to gang rape American women to become an official member of the gang."

Three MS-13 gang members were charged in the brutal rapes of two deaf girls, one 14, the other 17, in a Massachusetts park in 2002. One victim, who also suffered from cerebral palsy, was pushed out of her wheelchair before being raped repeatedly.

Microsoft Chairman Replaces Mao in China (Turkey), 9/5/06

High school students in Shanghai are in for a surprise when they open their history textbooks.

Chinese dynasties and Communist revolutions have been dropped from newly revised history textbooks and been replaced by colorful tutorials on economics, technology, social customs and globalization.

The theory of Socialism has been reduced to a single short chapter in the text book version for senior high school students.

Mao, founding father of Modern China, is mentioned only once — in a chapter on etiquette.

J.P. Morgan, Bill Gates, the New York Stock Exchange, the space shuttle and Japan’s bullet train are all highlighted in the new textbooks.

Confectioners see form of Virgin Mary in dripped chocolate

Associated Press, 8/17/06

Fountain Valley, Calif. -- As a chocolatier to the rich and famous, Martucci Angiano has posed with many celebrities — but on Thursday she held in her hand a figure that dazzles her more than any Hollywood star.

Workers at Angiano's gourmet chocolate company, Bodega Chocolates, discovered under a vat a 2-inch-tall column of chocolate drippings that they believe bears a striking resemblance to the Virgin Mary.

Since the discovery Monday, Angiano's employees have spent much of their time hovering over the tiny figure, praying and placing rose petals and candles around it.

Stuck in Pierre?
Get married

Capital Journal Staff, 8/8/06

PIERRE, South Dakota - Their wedding vows were exchanged on a green shamrock, painted in front of Bob's Lounge, and the bride and groom toasted their marriage with Coors Light afterward.

Shundra Goodwin and Gregg Upchurch pulled into Pierre on Monday riding a motorcycle that needed help from a mechanic. While waiting in a Pierre bar to resume their trip to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in the Black Hills, the couple - first partly in jest and later with more seriousness - started talking about getting married that afternoon.

Upchurch, 42, of Grandview, Tenn., said before their trip to South Dakota that he and Goodwin, 32, of Crossville, Tenn., had discussed getting married in the Black Hills on Tuesday. David Kelley, the owner of Bob's Lounge on West Dakota Avenue, overheard their conversation and encouraged the Tennessee couple to hold their nuptial ceremony in Pierre.

"We thought that there was no better time than the present," Upchurch said. "And then for good luck, we decided to get married on the shamrock outside."

For more than 20 years, the owners of Bob's Lounge have painted a large green shamrock on the sidewalk in front of the tavern.

According to Upchurch, Kelley became the couple's "official wedding planner" by providing assistance in obtaining the wedding rings and a marriage license. Goodwin found a ring for herself at Ferley Jewelers in downtown Pierre, but Kelley drove them to Riddle's Jewelry at the Pierre Mall to purchase Upchurch's ring. They discovered that South Dakota requires no blood test for obtaining a marriage license, making a same-day marriage possible. The couple also arranged to have the Rev. Howard Grinager, pastor at the United Methodist Church in Pierre, officiate the ceremony.

The couple from Tennessee exchanged wedding vows at about 5:15 p.m. in front of Bob's Lounge with about a dozen people - both lounge regulars and other bikers headed for Sturgis - in attendance.

According to Goodwin, the wedding was her perfect day.

"It's where we're at today, and with people pitching in to help us, it's been great," Upchurch said. "This has been a wonderful community."###
